Speeding Tickets in Maryland

One of the most common traffic infractions that people in Maryland commit is speeding. Though it is very easy to lose track of how fast one is driving but it is also unlawful to drive over the speed limit. Speed limits are set for a reason and they exist to keep everyone on the road safe. When an individual does drive over the speed limit, they may be pulled over by law enforcement and issued a speeding ticket. The penalties of speeding in Maryland are, of course, dependent on how fast one is driving over the speed limit. The consequences of speeding are as follows:

  • If a driver speeds between 1 and 9 miles per hour over the speed limit, they will be subject to a fine of $120 and 1 point added to their license
  • If a driver speeds between 10 and 19 miles per hour over the speed limit, they will be subject to a fine of $140 and 2 points added to their license
  • If a driver speeds between 20 and 29 miles per hour over the speed limit, they will be subject to a fine of $270 and 2 points added to their license
  • If a driver speeds between 30 and 39 miles per hour over the speed limit, they will be subject to a fine of $540 and have 5 points added to their license
  • Finally, if a driver speeds 40 miles per hour or more over the speed limit, they will be subject to a fine of $1000 and have 5 points added to their license

When a driver has points added to their license, they may be subject to increased insurance premiums.
